One STEP forward… Ian Kirk talks to 170 eager listeners

Ian Kirk was one of two speakers that enthralled a huge audience of 170 guests at the most recent STEP (The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners) talk at the OGH, the subject of which was Trust and Company Law Revision. Ian covered an update on recent changes to the statutory basis of trusts and companies.

Training Success at Collas Day - Collas Day has started 2009 with a further two Guernsey advocates.

Advocate Paul Nettleship was called to the bar at the end of last year and joins Advocate Gareth Bell who was called earlier on in 2008.

Moot success for the Grammar School - The Grammar girls argue their way to the top

After involvement in Collas Day's annual moot, head of sixth form at the Grammar School, Tina Watson said, "Students who are interested in pursuing a career in law benefit greatly from the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of legal debate, and the processes and provedures that are involved. It has been a brilliant example of learning in action and the improvement of all of the students involved has been simply amazing."

Credit crunch

Similar to the approach taken in other jurisdictions around the world in response to the credit crunch, in late 2008 the States of Guernsey resolved to establish a deposit compensation scheme to protect the deposits of retail depositors with local banks. The scheme covers the first £50,000 of deposits by individuals.

Estate Agents learn of new obligations

Collas Day held a seminar informing local Estate Agents that they would be required by 8 October 2008 to put procedures in place for customer due diligence, record-keeping, internal reporting and training relating to anti-money laundering - not formerly required. This came as a shock to many of them.

COO! - Chief Operating Officer appointed

Mike Tidd took up his position as Chief Operating Officer at Collas Day at the beginning of September. Mike has operational control of the firm and will sit on the firm's management board.

New director for GTC - Promotion to the Board at GTC

Coryn Le Clerc was appointed a director of Collas Day subsidiary, the Guernsey Trust Company, in September. Coryn has worked for GTC for some 5 years as a manager.
