Collas Day's Brandon Doffing has qualified as a UK Solicitor and will be called as an Attorney in the State of New York on the 29th of April this year.

US-born Brandon, who completed his training contract with Collas Day in February, studied for the notoriously tough New York State Bar Exam during the end of 2008. He sat the two-day examination in February 2009 and was part of only 25.1% of foreign educated people who successfully achieved a pass. He then passed an ethics exam in November 2009, which is compulsory for almost all US states.

Brandon said, "Studying for the New York Bar has given me an interesting insight into the different approach to law across the pond. I've been lucky enough to have studied in the UK, and trained and worked in both Guernsey and the UK. Along with the New York study, I am also building experience and I'm sure both will benefit our global client base."

Throughout his training contract, Brandon was required to undertake seats within a number of departments, to gain the broad experience required to practise as a solicitor. For six months of this period, he was seconded to the real estate team at top European firm CMS Cameron McKenna in London. As part of the firm's relationship management programme, and to further broaden his knowledge of the finance industry, he also undertook a two-month secondment to one of the Island's leading banking institutions.

Jason Romer, Partner in the Commercial Department said, "Brandon has a firm handle on the complexities of corporate law, and with the experiences he already has under his belt at such an early stage in his career, he is a fantastic asset to the team and to the firm."

Brandon isn't allowing himself a rest from the books though. Now working in the firm's commercial department and specialising in Banking and Finance, he is undertaking a Masters degree in International Legal Practice, a two-year course which will see him focussing on International Public Companies, Intellectual Property and Mergers and Acquisitions.
